The 2009 Compton Dando Fayre pulls in record crowds. The Annual Village Fayre in the tiny Village of Compton Dando near Bath , attracted record crowds for their annual Glebe meadow event on Saturday 4 th July 2009. The stalls and sideshows included the ever popular tractor rides, a steam engine, and many sideshows and competitions including splat the rat and hook a duck with a milk the cow competition and tombola. The White Elephant and vegetable Stall took record amounts.Those able to make the climb up the spiral steps of St Mary's Church tower were delighted with the magnificent views of the Fayre and beyond. The melodious tones of announcer Clive Howarth, mastered the packed programme of events which included Morris Dancers and Children's games all under the guidance of event director Barend ter Haar who said “Despite the threatening heavy thunder clouds rolling overhead during set up earlier in the morning, the sun shone through to provide a magnificent family day out for our visitors and store holders”. Sitting in the glorious sunshine by the Wild Owl conservation team, who brought their Barn Owl and nest box exhibits, were the Whittington family from Keynsham where Jean Whittington said, “We look forward to visiting the Compton Dando Fayre and attend every year, bringing my daughter Nicole when she was a child, and now we visit with the addition of my grand daughter Charlotte”, and adds “It's become a family tradition to support and enjoy this local event”. The day was topped off with the Raffle then a Grand Duck Race on the river Chew. Exhausted Villagers and stallholders were treated to an evening's entertainment with a Jazz band and Buffet provided by the Compton Inn and the BBQ remained glowing until late whilst the day's events were reconciled. “This huge effort is a testament to the Village spirit which is mustered from such a small community and is a magnificent, well oiled operation thanks to the many work parties and meetings held over the previous 12 months, also made up of friends and families from near and far” reports webmaster Gary Pearce and adds “The vibrant team that is well managed chaired by Alison ter Haar , will no doubt be planning new elements ready to entertain the crowds for next years show”. The profit raised of a record £3600 will be shared by the Church, the Parish Hall and the Community Association that support and fund local projects, and the village
